Where posture meets possibility.

Welcome! I’m Joshua Elbaum, founder of Listening Inward.

I am a Guild-certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and a Registered Somatic Movement Educator offering group classes and hands-on individual sessions in Northampton, MA, and online. I am excited to join you in your journey of healing, embodiment, and learning.

Drawing on my deep study of the Feldenkrais Method, Tai Chi, and creative emotional expression, I help clients to unwind the habitual patterns of movement that create limitations in their life, and explore new patterns that reveal the body’s true potential. Whether you are struggling with muscular pain or difficulty, seeking to deepen your somatic or creative practice, or hoping to retain ability as you age, I am confident we can find a way forward.

I approach movement education in a way that does not contradict my clients. Rather than struggling against current limitations, we work within a range of comfort until new possibilities open up for the nervous system and the realm of ease begins to grow.

What is the Feldenkrais Method?

The Feldenkrais Method is a process of learning, through movement, how to regain a sense of embodied presence and ease in daily living.

You can find more information about the method here, or by reading this article in the New York Times.

This work can be experienced both in group classes, where movements are guided by the practitioner verbally, and in individual lessons where movement is guided by either touch or verbal instruction.

Individual sessions are for those who want more.

Individual sessions provide one-on-one time to address your specific challenges and interests. Maybe you are looking for pain relief, or are recovering from an injury. Maybe you want to have a better handle on your anxiety, or find a new depth in your creative practice.

Together we will identify the patterns of movement that are no longer serving you, and offer your system pleasurable alternatives. Afterward, you can expect an experience of ease, alignment, and potency that will support the life you want to live.

Group classes restore ease and pleasure to your daily life.

Group classes offer a community engaged in a common practice. In each session, we move together, breathe together, and learn together.

Ongoing weekly sessions allow you to carve out time to develop your self awareness and care. No matter when you begin, each week will build on the past week's learnings, as we orbit ever closer to our truest selves.

Josh teaches with great clarity, and has helped me cultivate a deeper understanding of movement both on the physical level and on the level of awareness, providing powerful insight into the internal experience of embodiment. Through their classes, I’ve made significant progress in unraveling inefficient physical patterns and alleviating longstanding pain. Their teaching is simultaneously accessible to people new to the method, as well as challenging and fruitful for experienced movers. As an aside, the online format is not at all a barrier to a very rich and nuanced class. Josh’s classes are an essential and refreshing part of my week, bringing me back into my body in an increasingly digital world.
