FAQs

What can I expect during an individual session? How do I need to prepare?

We will begin with an interview, so that I can better get to know you and whatever brings you to this work. We will then find a comfortable position for you on the table, or in a chair if that is what your body needs. Through listening touch, I will guide you through a series of gentle movements that have roots in a functional pattern, without contradicting or pushing against your body’s inclinations. As your nervous system begins to accept the supportive touch, old muscular patterns begin to soften and let go, and new avenues of effortless movement open up. After a session, you can expect to feel taller, aligned, relaxed, energized, and creative.

What can I expect during class? How do I need to prepare?

In a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson, you will be guided verbally through a series of gentle movements where personal comfort and curiosity are paramount. Common positions include lying on the back, on the side, on the stomach, and sitting. Ideally, we work on the floor with some sort of rug, blanket, or mat to make the surface softer. Folded towels, pillows, or rollers may be used as supports to lessen discomfort and create a quieter nervous system. The positions present in a given lesson will be described in the weekly newsletter so you can determine how best to accommodate your own needs.

How is this work different from Yoga/Massage/Physical Therapy/Pilates/etc?

What differentiates Feldenkrais from most other modalities is that it prioritizes learning above all else. As you learn to differentiate between movement that works for you and movement that works against you, you become your own teacher and healer. The Feldenkrais Method will only serve to deepen the benefits you experience from any other practice or therapy, because it puts your development into your own hands.

I have a physical limitation, can I still do this?

Yes! All lessons can be adapted to serve the individual. If the limitation is severe, or if you regularly experience discomfort during class, it might make sense to schedule a 1:1 session. I am happy to answer any specific questions you have via email at listeninginwardcontact@gmail.com or in the the contact form.

Should I start with a group class or 1:1? What is the difference?

Group class is a perfect way to expose yourself to this method if you are looking to satisfy your curiosity. However, if you have a specific difficulty you are interested in working with, having 1:1 guidance may better address the specificity of your experience.

How can I learn more about The Feldenkrais Method?

Read this article in the New York Times. The Feldenrkais Method is written about in The Brain’s Way of Healing by Norman Doidge, which is an inspiring examination of the human brain’s plasticity, and gives context to how this method fits into the greater world of neuroplastic healing.I would then recommend the book Awareness Through Movement, by Moshe Feldenkrais as it is considered by many to be the most accessible of his writings. It includes an overview of his thinking, as well as some written lessons you can do on your own. More info can also be found here.
